David Stevens Space-based information, which includes earth observation data, is increasingly becoming an integral part of our lives. We take been relying for decades on data obtained from meteorological satellites for updates on the weather and to monitor weather condition-related natural disasters such equally hurricanes. We now count on our personal satellite-based navigation systems to guide us to the nearest Starbucks Coffee and employ web-based applications such as Google Earth and Microsoft Virtual Earth to report the area of places nosotros will or would like to visit. At the same time, satellite-based technologies accept experienced impressive growth in recent years with an increase in the number of bachelor sensors, an increase in spatial, temporal and spectral resolutions, an increment in the availability of radar satellites such as Terrasar-Ten and ALOS, and the launching of specific constellations such as the Disaster Monitoring Constellation (DMC), COSMO- SkyMed (COnstellation of small Satellites for the Mediterranean basin Observation) and RapidEye. Even more recent are the initiatives being set-up to ensure that space-based data is being accessed and used by decision makers, such as Watch Asia for the Asia and Pacific region and SERVIR for the Latin America and Caribbean region.

In the spring of 2010, the Humboldt State University formed the Geospatial Chore Force to ameliorate the geospatial curriculum. Assigned to develop a practical series of Geospatial courses that would serve students across multiple programs, ii primary areas of assessment were considered. First, the existing curriculum was evaluated for redundancy and overlap. Second, professional requirements were identified to eliminate obsolete content and replace it with relevant job skills. As a member of the Geospatial Task Strength, I conducted interviews with both alumni and students to gain starting time-mitt insight into our assessment goals. The consensus from those who had experience with geospatial courses at HSU was that the Intermediate Geographic Information Systems grade was outdated and lacked relevancy in terms of chore skills and mod belittling methods. This assessment was confirmed when course content was evaluated based on standards divers in the U.S. Section of Labor Geospatial Engineering Competency Model. This book is the consequence of the work and development that followed over the years following the Geospatial Task Force recommendation. Hither, readers will find an introduction to several geospatial modeling techniques. Though some tutorials presented here encompass similar concepts, each represents a complete and independent exercise. The modeling techniques shown here but scratch the surface of what is possible for each. The intent is to introduce readers to a varied assortment of geospatial modeling techniques and to set up students for more advanced work. I sincerely hope that past working through these tutorials, you will develop the skills y'all demand to exist successful in the workplace. —Nicolas R. Malloy
